Just watched NCIS's 200th episode with my wife. It was interesting, but as I've not followed the show entirely over the past 9 seasons, I have a few characters as to whom I was unacquainted with. But my wife has seen it all, so it was an even bigger deal for her.
so for tonight's update, I ask you all: what, in your opinion, makes for good television, and more importantly, how does a show make it all the way to 9 seasons and still be a #1 hit? Do you ever feel like a show has to run out of story ideas at some point? Or do you feel like rehashing is ok if it's done differently? I mean we all know that one plot line we've seen in every tv show, because, inherently all tv shows are the same.
In my personal opinion, it all has to start with a good concept, and then construct great characters. I mean GREAT because if you have mediocre characters, they wont drive the story nor will they be interesting to watch.
I feel for any tv show, no matter what each episode is about, there is an ongoing arch with each character that grows and changes all the time. For most shows I give them a grace period of about 1 season, give or take a few episodes. It usually takes the show writers a season or so to figure out characters, especially in how the audience responds to them, but also in how the characters mesh together. Some characters work, some don't. Some work better than others, and some shows, after a bit of time, manage to get that good mix. From all I've watched, it seems that NCIS has done this.
I, however, come back to my original question. What do you all think makes a tv show work or not work. Feel free to offer some examples.

P.S. If anything appears mistyped, it is because I did this without my glasses, and, to be honest, I don't feel like going back and editing this post. goodnight.
