So started watching two shows on netflix, one was The Tudors and the other was Spartacus. I noticed that in the Tudors, the guy playing King Henry the 8th was, in fact, not a chubbier man. I realize paintings aren't always completely accurate impressions of people pre-photos, but a king would probably want his likeness in painting form to be as accurate as possible or at least as flattering as possible. And since many of the images we see of him are of a chubbier man, then it's likely he thought he looked good in those paintings. So the man we see playing this king in the show is a younger, more physically fit man. Not that I expect Movies or Television to good at being historically accurate in everything, but sometimes you know they are stretching things to get a bigger sex appeal, clearly.
Spartacus is much of the same, but in a different way. If you've not seen this show, but have seen 300 or Sin City, it is similar to those. Heavily Stylized, lots of that ridiculous blood splatter and slow motion action sequences periodically.
I haven't studied enough history to know all the details of either Henry the VIII's life or Spartacus's, but you know they have to take some creative license to make things work for their purposes, but not that I'd use either of these shows as an educational tool, partially because the potential accuracy, and partial because it's Showtime and Starz. Many of the shows tend to be on the Mature rating.
Not going on a rant or anything about these shows, but noting that if you're watching it with someone who knows a lot about the actual history, or if you yourself know, then it can be tough to watch it. Are there any shows that you, my readers, watch that are historically based, or movies for that matter, that you know have deliberately changed historical events to make the film work that you have seen that you have trouble watching because of what you know about it? (convoluted sentence, sorry, it's late.)
that's all for now.
